Hydrogen Storage

Two research approaches: capillary storage systems and composite materials for containment.

Stage
Research and feasibility development
Geography
UAE and Saudi Arabia as regional contexts for research and industrial dialogue

Purpose

Explore how hydrogen could be stored and integrated into defined energy, transport and industrial applications, starting with a clear operating case and safety envelope.

Capillary systems

Capillary systems are one research approach in the materials portfolio. Work begins with the proposed storage mechanism, material compatibility, sealing, charging and discharge behaviour, and the means of measuring retained hydrogen.

Composite containment

Composite materials form a separate approach to the storage structure. The reinforcement, matrix, liner or barrier, joints and manufacturing process must be evaluated as a complete system.

Where the research could be used

Energy applications may examine storage between production and use. Transport applications have different requirements for mass, volume, cycling and refuelling. Industrial applications begin with the process demand, gas quality and site safety case. These are separate feasibility studies, not interchangeable deployment claims.

The MAXIMUS role

MAXIMUS structures the research question, brings together relevant expertise and prepares cooperation pathways. Technical development and safety decisions belong to qualified researchers, engineers and authorised operators.

Cooperation

Potential work involves materials laboratories, gas-storage engineers, energy-system designers, transport developers and industrial users with a defined storage requirement.

What the next stage needs

  • Demonstrated storage mechanism and measured gas balance
  • Independent containment, cycling, permeation and failure testing
  • Application safety case and the competent approval route
